Earlier this week, Ottawa’s new Zoning By-law was approved at the joint meeting of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and the Planning and Housing Committee.
This by-law aims to modernize zoning citywide and get it in line with Official Plan policies. It mostly impacts suburbs and urban centres. In the rural areas, the changes are mostly about the way zones are organized/ categorized, without materially changing the uses.
While several motions were tabled today, one related to quarries, was relevant to our rural context: that no mineral aggregate operation can occur within the prescribed separation distance (300m) of an existing home – to ensure the rules apply balanced protection for residents and landowners. It passed without concerns.
