Ottawa is planning for strong growth to 2051, and this week at a Special Joint Planning & Housing Committee (PHC) & Agriculture & Rural Affairs Committee (ARAC) meeting, we received the latest projections that will guide the next phase of the City’s Growth Management Strategy – it says that by 2051 we could have a population of 1.7M. The next phase of this work will examine what lands are available to meet demand for housing in the long term.
Ottawa needs more housing, but as a rural councillor, I believe that where we build matters. Building should focus in areas that can be serviced efficiently and where complete communities can be supported. Moderate growth around existing villages has to be done responsibly – that means well water isn’t compromised and road and traffic infrastructure grows accordingly. I won’t support proposals that compromise farmland or that are out of character of our rural lifestyle. I hear the need for smaller scale homes and options for seniors to downsize and continue to live in our communities – striking this balance is very important to me. I’m always thinking about what moderate growth needs to look like to ensure strong vibrant rural villages, and invite you to share your views with me anytime.
