Winter Wear and Tear: How the City Is Tackling Potholes

It’s been a tough winter, and our roads are feeling it. All those freeze‑thaw cycles mean more potholes—but the City is on it! Crews have been working non‑stop, and more resources are being deployed to speed up repairs.

Meet the reinforcements:

Two Python Pothole Patchers are now on Ottawa streets! These machines can fix a pothole in under two minutes, and operators work safely from inside the cab. They’ll be working day and night over the next few weeks in neighbourhoods across our ward. If you see them at work, give a wave from a safe distance—and please don’t pass them. Repairs only take a moment!

Key details:

  • 52,755 potholes repaired so far this winter
  • Crews maintain 6,000 km of roads across Ottawa
  • Ottawa sees up to 80 freeze‑thaw cycles each winter—the main cause of potholes
