I had the incredible opportunity to spend time with the Ottawa Police Mounted Unit, getting an up-close look at the professionalism, skill, and training that goes into this remarkable team.

Many Osgoode residents first met the Mounted Unit when they visited our Metcalfe Meet & Greet on Victoria Street earlier this spring. I had the chance to see far beyond the public demonstration and witness the extensive training that prepares both officers and horses for the wide range of work they do every day. The Mounted Unit, operationalized in 2025, is already proving to be an invaluable asset to Ottawa. From crowd management and public safety to search and rescue operations and community engagement, these officers and their horses bring unique capabilities that simply can’t be replicated.

One of the most interesting things I learned is that mounted officers have a unique vantage point. From horseback, they can easily spot distracted drivers using cell phones, identify emerging safety concerns, and monitor large areas more effectively than officers in cruisers. In many situations, a single mounted officer can provide the presence and coverage that would otherwise require multiple officers on foot.

I even had the opportunity to participate in some of the training exercises and spend time with both the horses and the officers who work so closely with them. It was inspiring to see and hear firsthand how the Mounted Unit is strengthening relationships with residents while enhancing public safety across our city.

What makes this initiative even more impressive is that it represents true collaboration between Ottawa Police Service, the Province of Ontario, and the RCMP. It feels like the beginning of something really special for our city.
